About Cork
The Home of Portuguese Cork
Every Cork By Design handbag begins its journey in the protected cork oak forests of Portugal, known as the Montados. For centuries, these remarkable landscapes have produced the world's finest cork while supporting one of Europe's most important ecosystems.
Located mainly in the Alentejo region, Portugal's cork forests produce more than half of the world's cork supply and provide a vital habitat for a rich diversity of wildlife, including rare bird species, butterflies and native plants.
More than a natural resource, the montados are an important part of Portugal's cultural heritage—carefully protected and sustainably managed so they can continue to thrive for generations to come.
The Cork Harvest
One of the things that makes cork so remarkable is the way it's harvested.
The cork oak is the only tree in the world capable of naturally regenerating its bark, allowing it to be harvested without harming the tree. Every nine years, skilled harvesters carefully remove the outer bark by hand, leaving the tree healthy and ready to regenerate once again.
After harvesting, the cork is naturally seasoned before being boiled to purify and soften the material. It is then carefully flattened, shaved into thin sheets and bonded to a durable fabric backing, creating the premium Portuguese cork fabric used in every Cork By Design creation.
Why We Choose Portuguese Cork
We believe a beautiful handbag should be just as practical as it is beautiful.
Portuguese cork is as durable as leather, yet softer, lighter and naturally water-resistant, making it an exceptional material for everyday handbags and accessories. It's easy to care for, resistant to moisture and comfortable to carry all day thanks to its incredibly lightweight structure.
Because cork is harvested without harming the tree, it is also one of nature's most renewable materials. Naturally hypoallergenic, biodegradable and animal-friendly, it offers a beautiful alternative to leather without compromising on quality, durability or style.
Every Cork By Design piece is handcrafted in Sydney using premium Portuguese cork, bringing together generations of Portuguese heritage with contemporary Australian craftsmanship.
